Just because we’re in the middle of the continent doesn’t mean we miss out on one of the greatest foods ever made: sushi. The midwest has created its own spin on a Japanese cuisine and I am here for it. As an Omaha native, I have spent my 20 years tasting and exploring the area’s best sushi. To save you the time, here’s a list of my favorite go-to’s for sushi in the Omaha area.

#5: Hutong Sushi Grill

Location: La Vista, NE
Address: 7202 Giles Road, La Vista, NE 68128#5: Wild Rice Sushi and Grill

Hutong Sushi is the perfect place for take-out sushi. However, the quality of the sit-down experience is not my favorite in town. When I’m in the mood to stay in but still want to chow down on some sushi, this is the perfect place to go. Their sushi is very affordable with the price ranging from $3 for a basic cucumber roll to $13 for some of their signature rolls. Their website is a little tricky to order from so I suggest calling in to put in a takeout order.

#4: Wild Rice Sushi and Grill

Location: Papillion, NE
Address: 248 Olson Drive, Suite 101, Papillion, NE 68046

Wild Rice opened in the summer of 2016 and has been a hit ever since. The sushi is delicious and affordably priced. Their rolls range from $3 for simple rolls like an avocado roll, up to $20 for a luxurious King Lobster roll. They also offer items such as hibachi, stir fry, and other traditional Japanese entrees. If you’re looking for a casual stop for sushi, this is the place to go. Their takeout option is another convenient choice for the sushi lover on-the-go!

#3: Hiro 88

Locations: Old Market, 132nd & Maple, and Welch Plaza in Millard

Hiro 88 is a popular Japanese restaurant with three locations in Omaha and two in Lincoln. Hiro is a great option for someone who’s new to the sushi world. They offer a wide variety of Japanese cuisine from things off of the grill to traditional sushi. Hiro may seem a little pricey compared to other sushi restaurants, however, it is an appropriate value for the quality of the food and the experience. If you make your way here, make sure to reserve enough time for a great sit-down dinner or date!

#2: Blue Sushi Sake Grill

Locations: Old Market, Shops of Legacy, Grayhawk Pointe

Blue Sushi came in at a close second for my favorite sushi in Omaha. Like the other restaurants, Blue offers an extensive menu with grill and sushi options. However, sushi is the way to go here. Their wide range of rolls gives everyone an opportunity to be delighted. My go-to’s are the South Pacific, Blue Balls, and Hawaiian Rolls. My main piece of advice is to only go during happy hour because otherwise the bill can rack up pretty quickly. Check out your location’s website to find their happy hour times!

#1: Umami

Location: Bellevue, NE
Address: 1504 Galvin Road South, Bellevue, NE 68005

Umami is one of the best hidden gems you’ll find in the Omaha area. Sushi chef Keen Zheng came to Bellevue to open this restaurant after mastering his sushi skills under some of the greatest sushi chefs in New York City. This is the perfect place to go for the authentic sushi experience for an amazing price. Their unbelievable lunch special (Monday through Saturday until 3 p.m.) offers three rolls of sushi for $10.95! Don’t let the low price fool you: this is some of the best sushi you’ll have in this area! They also offer an extensive menu of sushi, hibachi, and kitchen options that could please any customer. Head on over to Umami to ignite your taste buds like never before!
